I know this is an unpopular opinion, and maybe I need to spend more time to "get into it". The visual ship designer is cool, but everything just feels so mudane and lackluster. Galactic Civilizations 3: I tried so hard to like this game, but I find it so incredibly boring. I wish it had multiplayer- but it would be difficult to implement. If you haven't tried this game and are willing to invest the time, I highly recommend it. I wish it had better multi-core support, as it gets slow even on powerful systems when you have a lot going on in big galaxies. Huge empires tend to get less fun to manage, and you end up being forced into automation of some aspects. However, once you get good, the AI is really not that great. Here are my quick thoughts on some of the recent games I've played:ĭistant Worlds: Universe This one is the hardest to get into with the steepest learning curve, but there is so much there! I love the real-time pausable gameplay, control over automation levels, ship customization, vastness of the galaxies, diversity of gameplay, and much more. Intelligent AI, in both combat and overall strategy Great Civilization management (especially important late game) I love that there are so many 4x games to choose from, but I've yet to find one that truly captivates me as well as some of the older ones.īack in the day, I loved Pax Imperia: Eminent Domain and Space Empires IV, but have yet to find great replacements for these.
